Flu is the shortened form of infleuenza. Flu is an infectious disease of birds and mammals caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae, the influenza viruses.It is an extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses named influenza A or B viruses. Flu appears most frequently in winter and early spring. The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract.
The flu is not as same as a cold. There is a huge difference between flu and cold. However both flu and cold shows many of the same symptoms. The cold is caused by a different virus, and it tends to have milder symptoms than that of flu. The complication of cold is also less severe than the flu.
When the influenza virus gets into the body, it moves into the respiratory tract. Then it binds to the surface of cells of respiratory tract. The virus then releases its RNA into the cell’s nucleus. The cell’s genetic information (DNA and RNA) is stored in the nucleus. Then virus replicates itself and takes over the functions of the cell. The virus move to the cell membrane until the cell finally dies and releases them out into the body. Then the flu viruses go on to infect other cells.
As a result of repeated attack by the flu viruses respiratory tissues swell up and become inflamed (the inflammation usually heals within a few weeks). As the virus moves through the respiratory tract and enters into the bloodstream, the first symptoms begin to emerge. The replication process continues for up to several days, until the body’s immune system begins to shows its response upon the viruses.
The flu virus is spread from person to person through respiratory secretions and typically. Usually it attacks those groups of people who spend time in close contact, such as in daycare facilities, school classrooms, college dormitories, military barracks, offices, and nursing homes.
Flu is spread when anyone inhales droplets in the air that contain the flu virus, make direct contact with respiratory secretions through sharing drinks or utensils, or handle items contaminated by an infected person. Flu symptoms begin to develop from 1-4 days after infection with the virus.
